20 randomly chosen pieces of rootkit-laden malware files were pitted against the major anti-virus and anti-spyware vendors to rate detection and removal capabilities.
In both categories, Symantec's Norton came out tops, although the tool did not fully remove all 20 rootkits.
The application that performed the poorest, according to Thompson, was Microsoft's Microsoft Windows Defender (Beta 2), which is being built into the Windows Vista operating system.
In the detection category, Thompson tested the software's ability to find the presence of a rootkit after it is installed on a computer. If a particular rootkit is not detected, it could be due to either engine limitations or missing detections for a particular version of the rootkit, according to the report released by Symantec on Nov. 3, here in PFD form.
… in the clean-up category, Symantec also scored the highest, well ahead of Webroot, F-Secure, McAfee, Sunbelt and Microsoft.
However, affording to Thompson's findings, most of the security tools did not fully remove more than half of the rootkits. Sunbelt, Microsoft and Trend Micro deleted only five of the 20 rootkits.
Esto si que me sorprende un poco. Hace algún tiempo leí que Microsoft tenía uno de los mejores productos en cuanto a seguridad. 5/20 Rootkits detectados es un mal, mal número (25% de efectividad). Aunque termino por creer que estas pruebas de laboratorio nunca llegan a demostrar la real capacidad de cada programa. La mayoría nunca será capáz de detectar el 50% del malware de la red.

Ahora, si algo hace menos creíble estos estudios, es cuando un producto de X empresa, lidera un estudio que X mandó a hacer -y pagó para que se hiciera.
Ahora tiene sentido que se hiciera tanto énfasis en que Microsoft quedara de último -a pesar que quedó de último con otros dos programas- cuando al hacer algo de memoria, recordamos que estos dos gigantes, llevan una pugna desde hace ya algunos meses.

…eso lo aclara todo. Symantec es el mejor según ells mismos, aunque en la práctica sus antivirus sean un colador para el malware. Antes de que lleguen los de “usen linux…” (si yo lo tengo en casa, per las máquinas que mantengo en el trabajo usan autocad), recomiendo AVG.
